Paiste Formula 602 Modern Essentials Cymbals

I remember when I was 15 and getting the train up to London and buying my first quality cymbals, they were Paiste Formula 602 Sound Edge 15 inch Hi-Hats. They were excellent, in fact they were so good, it made the rest of cymbals sound like Lo-Fi. They were so crisp and sounded like a 192 kHz, 24 Bit recording. I couldn’t wait to buy a  22 inch ride and a 16 inch crash, which I did after saving every penny I could to get them. I finally bought an 18 inch crash to complete my rock set up. I loved reading up on Paiste’s special metal formula that went into these and the fact that they were hand-made in Switzerland.

I was quite surprised therefore after all this time they have re-introduced them and now a new enhanced version called Modern Essentials. Their endorsement is something special as well because they have been developed in collaboration with Vinnie Colaiuta.

Vinnie had a few words to say about these :-  “I wanted to take some of that richness, warmth, darkness and a bit of complexity of the Signature Traditionals and combine that with the transparency and stick definition of the existing 602 sound. In retrospect, I think that Paiste Sound Development had a very similar idea. Their vision and my vision were completely in alignment.”

This excellent range of cymbals include 14″ and 15″ hi hats, 16:, 18: and 20″ crashes, 18″ and 22″ Chinas, 20″ and 22″ rides and 8″ and 10″ splashes and you can try them out at Namm but if you can’t get there have a look at www.paiste.com.

I am sure that my first thoughts on looking at the new Focusrite Forte, are the same as everyone else, in that this looks like Focusrite have taken Apogee’s Duet 2 interface and improved it somewhat.

If you are wondering what a Forte is, it is a 2 In / 4 Out 24 Bit / 196 Hz USB2 audio interface for Mac or PC (say that when you’re drunk). It has two high quality remote-controlled mic preamps; the same mic preamps that features in Focusrite’s top-flight RedNet range. It also has the highest-quality precision 24-bit A-D and D-A converters – sounds good so far. Focusrite with their wealth of experience in this field believes this is their ‘forte’ and they have designed a very compact high quality audio interface for audio professionals to provide them with the best possible signal path into a DAW. I wonder how much better this sounds in relation to my existing audio interface and whether it could convince me to change to it. I certainly think that this looks the ideal solution for laptop users and for musicians on the move.

I do love Novation Synths and I am still very happy with my Supernova II rack that I picked up for a good price a few years back. More recently after a considerable break Novation got my taste buds going again with the Ultranova and now in a world of small portable gadgets and people with tiny fingers they have released the Mininova. Designed to take anywhere, fit anywhere, play anywhere and sing and no doubt compete heavily with the excellent and very popular MicroKORG.

I know before I play a note that I am going to love the sound because it has the same synth engine as the Ultranova but personally I am not a great lover of small keys. However, this is not going to stop me enjoying every minute of this fun instrument that looks as if it has all the power and oomph of a full blown synth. I think what intrigues me here is that if it is basically an Ultranova, can you manipulate the sound differently with alternative set of controls? This may be difficult to see and hear without the two synths side by side – but let’s see if we can find out. Novation say that the Mininova is an Ultranova in a performance synthesizer format. The Mininova certainly seems to have a few tricks that are not on the Ultranova.
