HyperSound Innovations

Here is something I was not aware of – an audio company called Turtle Beach Corporation (famous for its HyperSound technology), has achieved another great breakthrough by creating directional audio using a transparent pane of glass.

This innovation could be used in such a variety of situations, in fact anything that is made of glass like the windscreen on your car for example. Have a look at the Youtube clip. Even better if you have been at the 2016 Electronics Entertainment Expo at the L.A. Convention Center for the last couple of days or you are there today, Turtle Beach will be showing an early prototype of their HyperSound Glass directional speakers.

So what is good about HyperSound? Well it has Improved audio quality and frequency response, low voltage cables and lower overall power consumption and emitter panel design have improved the ratio of audio volume to panel size, allowing for the production of much smaller panels.

I hear a lot about how to get your mix to sound better but it is an art and can take years to master. There are youtube clips to assist you, some that confuse you, some that sound convincing but still do not get you to where you want to be. Maybe one day the computer will do it all for you and make all your decisions for you to compensate for your room, your ears, your judgement and understanding.

Until that day, many of us that do our utmost to get a great sounding mix, need all the help we can get. This is why there will always be new products like the one that Audified have just announced. They call it “MixChecker” which is a plug-in to transform your studio monitors into classic reference monitors.

I have always wanted some Genelec’s from Finland in my setup and this company continue to improve and update their product range which was already of a very good quality in the first place. The new Genelec 8000 Smart Active Monitors (SAM) are powered monitors with integrated DSP room correction software. Genelec’s AutoCal allows for automatic alignment of level, timing, and equalisation of room response anomalies.

Genelec’s older models the 8010, 8020, 8030, 8040 and 8050 contine to be available but with the Genelec 8000 Smart Active Monitors there is the new range of numbers 8320A 8330A 8240A, 8250A, 8351A etc.

The 8320A has a 4″ woofer and a 3/4″ tweeter, whilst the 8330 has 5″ woofer and a 3/4″ tweeter and they get larger. The 8240A has a 6.5″ woofer and a 3/4″ tweeter and 8250A has a 8″ inch woofer and a 1″ tweeter.

I think I would like 8240As but at nearly £2000 a pair these are a bit expensive for most people, which is why they brought out the 8320A and 8330A.

Both monitors although smaller reach bass frequencies below the 3kHz active crossover frequency through a rear-facing reflex port. They have separate 50W Class-D amplifiers providing a frequency response of 66Hz to 20kHz on the 8320A and 59Hz to 20 kHz on the 8330A. If you want you can also get a matching 5.1 active subwoofer, the 150W 7350A.

I think that whilst the 8320As costing £1000 are a bit small, they still do a fantastic job as you can see from the specifications above, so perhaps I might have a look at the 8330A. These still are relatively expensive however at approximately £1200.

I tried out the 8330a’s in my local store along with the subwoofer
and they sounded awesome. They were very clear and precise and the Sub provided a great bass end. The trouble is you don’t know how they will sound in your own room but having the integrated DSP room correction software, it has some great chances of assisting you in getting a better mix.

Well what a great time I had in Frankfurt, we have seen the keyboards and drums in a bit of detail but there was some other memories to keep of this visit such as the Rhine, the Bose lorry, the Light show, the girls, the buildings and the guitars. Oh I nearly forgot, I have a small clip of Monolith – what a great performance and sound with their fantastic talent with midi controllers. Read on to see the clip.

 Genelec Studio Monitors

I think its time for some music to chill but at the same time consider some excellent studio monitors from Genelec who have put this video clip together demonstratiing their speaker range during the HiFi Expo 2012 in Helsinki, Finland. The first song is the excellent Rio De Janeiro Blue by Joe Sample & Randy Crawford (? 2006 Emarcy / PRA Records, Inc.) I just love the piano in this as well as Randy Crawford seductive voice – enjoy.

Following on from my review of the outstanding award-winning Adam A7X monitors, I now have a pair of the massive A77X monitors to put some serious sounds through and test their performance. These speakers were announced at Musikmesse 2011 and round off Adam’s AX series. They still utilises the X-Art Tweeter with the extended frequency response. So why the number 77 you may ask? Well Adam have put two seven inch speakers in these monitors and designed them to be set up horizontally instead of vertically. I haven’t done any Studio Monitor reviews and I was interested to see that a surprising amount of people were recommending Adam A7X Studio Monitors, in fact it is hard to find a bad word about them and the readers of Sound On Sound magazine have voted them the best studio monitors of 2011 and 2012. Adam Professional Audio is a German company, based in Berlin with distributors all over the world. The UK base is in London – Adam Audio UK Ltd. They already had a very successful product the A7 and last year they decided to upgrade their A-range. I haven’t heard an A7 so I cannot compare the two but I do know that you do not get prestigious awards from Sound On Sound two years in succession unless you have something very special.
