Novation are at it again as they are about to add a new baby gem in the Nova family. This time we have the MiniNova Synth which looks like a small decendant of the famous Ultranova. For such a small item this baby looks like it really has a full load of features adding in their recent vocal effect called VocalTune. Before I bore you with some of the specifications, have a look at this talented tweaker on this YouTube clip to get a real idea of its capabilities:-

As you probably noticed in the clip, as well as the VocalTune which tunes your voice to the note you are playing, it has push-button Animate controls, three oscillators, up to five effects, two filters and a dedicated filter cutoff, six envelopes, three LFOs, 36 different wavetables, 256 factory and 128 user patches. Oh and I nearly forgot the parameter matrix, which puts 24 sound-shaping tools on four large, tactile knobs. You can really warp your sounds and create some dirty phat bass sounds, screeching leads and ethereal pads.

Novation list the Key Features as follows:-

37-note mini-keys synth with custom-designed Novation keybed.
Sound and effects engines from Novation’s flagship UltraNova synth.
VocalTune feature with vocoder and included gooseneck mic.
Arpeggiator with real-time rhythm performance editing.
Animate function allows user to warp sounds while playing.
256 factory patches included, with space for an additional 128 user patches.

I like the fact that you can quickly search for sounds by selecting the style of music you’re making, or the type of sound you’re after whether it’s Pad, House. Lead or Hip-Hop. Perhaps one of the best bits is that it comes with a free software Patch Librarian for you to store endless sound patches on your PC. What is even better is that the sound patches on the Ultranova are compatible with MiniNova. So if you buy a MiniNova, you may wish to have a look at my soundpack containing 64 sounds:-
