For different reasons I am sure we all have our favourites but I have to say my top four (who were all making incredible sounds in the 70’s are:-

John Lord – Deep Purple, Kerry Minnear – Gentle Giant, Ken Hensley – Uriah Heep and Frank Wilson – Warhorse. These Guys made some hard-hitting rock sounds but in the main used a Hammond Organ.

I thought I would put a few clips here which demonstrates both their keyboard prowess and the great song classics that are now 40 years old.

I start with my absolute favourite – John Lord – Lazy. This clip I have to admit I have only seen recently. It is not a 70’s clip but a more recent Deep Purple live clip from 1999 taken from TOTAL ABANDON AUSTRALIA TOUR. Have a look at this at this truly talented keyboard legend. As a drummer, how can you stop yourself playing along to this – love this song:-

JOHN LORD – LAZY

KEN HENSLEY -URIAH HEEP – GYPSY

Next up is a classic Uriah Heep track – Gypsy. The Sound Ken Hensley gets from this Hammond Organ is so powerful. He demonstrates light and shade in both his playing and the variety of sounds he produces.

KERRY MINNEAR – GENTLE GIANT – FREE HAND

Complete Crazy Talent – The skill but unique sound of Gentle Giant’s medieval rock – you either love it or you hate it. In this clip Kerry Minnear shows his skills on his multi-keyboard setup.

JORDAN RUDESS – DREAM THEATRE

Here is a NAMM 2011 special featuring the many talents of Jordan Rudess and the eagerly awaited Korg Kronos. Hopefully this keyboard desire will be in stores very soon.

MY IDEAL KEYBOARD SETUP

I want my keyboard setup to look exactly like this. Give the clip time to play and after about 30 seconds in you will know what I mean. Excellent stuff from the Cup Size Choir.

THE BEST KEYBOARD DRUM SOLO

I am not sure whether or not this should be under keyboards or drums, it certainly demonstrates keyboard skills. Have a look at the many talents of David MeShow.

TUBULAR BELLS

Here is a great song – Tubular Bells – played by the very beautiful and talented Brooklyn Organ Synth Orchestra. Some real classic keyboards here amongst the girls – what more could you want?
