ROLI NOISE 5D – Free Virtual Seabord for iPhone and iPad

This looks like the best freebie available before Christmas for your iPhone or iPad. I really like the idea of having a Roli Rise keyboard that they released back in September but they are a bit expensive. I was therefore very surprised to hear about this freebie which is absolutely brilliant – you have got to get this.

The RISE, has this awesome MPE which stands for Multi-dimensional Polyphonic Expression. In simple english the whole keyboard surface has note on, key position along the length of it, and pressure (all per note). They are not the first company to do this but I would say they are or will be the most successful.

Apple meantime, with the iPhone 6S also introduced 3D Touch to its capabilities. No doubt the boffins at ROLI had a light bulb moment, as since then, they’ve been working to bring thier new free NOISE app to the market. Essentially on iPhone 6S, NOISE gives you the MPE playing experience (aside from the largess of the actual keyboard) but on your phone screen. You can apply the same pressure and positional control that you can with the Seaboard together with its own Mobile Sound Engine.

It has some 25 great sounds which I think come from their EQUATOR software synth. If you want more sounds you will be able to get these by purchasing from the App itself.

So if you are like me and want to experience what MPE is like but can not afford a Seaboard Rise, this is for you – free. You can only currently get it for the iPhone (iOS 9 up), the iPad version is not yet available.

Available free via the iTunes Store – what are you waiting for?

Simmons have certainly been around a few years now with their history of electronic drums. Makes me wonder if Roland would have invented the V-Drums if it wasn’t for Simmons. Simmons have some great ideas and in our new world of everything small, compact, cheaper and competative, they have announced a new drum controller called Stryke6..

Stryke6 is the first ever iPad controller that Simmons tells us it gives you a full drum kit playing experience. It has six velocity-sensitive pads plus two foot pedals for kick and hi-hat control and its small size is perfect for playing on the move.

What is nice is the App is free and you connect your controller to your iPad. The App has a good range of sounds or alternatively via USB connect to any computer to trigger Drum sounds such as EZ Drummer, Garage Band, Logic, Ableton Live etc.

It has colour coded Pads ach with colored LED light ringsand is ideal for practicing, even if you are on the move. Drum sticks are included, and it comes with connections for Lightning and 30-pin iPads, as well as a USB port.

Simmons Stryke6 is available now for US $129.99.

I am sorry I haven’t been around for a while now, I have been busy on another project which I will tell you about hopefully by November if I complete it by then. In my brief spare time, I came accross this excellent version of “Moves Like Jagger” interstingly performed by an assortment of very tallented people.

First up is the beautiful drummer Meytal Cohen. I am sure you have seen her on many other You Tube clips. She has a very smooth and relaxed way of playing and always looks like she loves what she is doing – great stuff.

Then there is the famous keyboard and iPad wizzard himself – Jordan Rudess who actually dances on this clip. Vocals are performed by the angelic sexy voice of Tammy Scheffer who provides some jazzy tones to this great song. The arrangement and additional iPad playing by a young Gentle Giant Fan called Eyal Amir.

Anyway have a listen, I am sure you will find this entertaining stuff as I did. If you dont like the song enjoy the dancing:-

I think my iPad is screaming out for some of this totally portable fun with Korg Gadgets. Korg state that Gadget offers a collection of 15 different synthesizers and drum machines called “Gadgets”, which can be freely combined to create powerful electronic music.

If you are worried that this is going to be too complicated for you and you are not a musician but want to join in with the fun, then you have no worries as each synth offers a keyboard featuring a Scale function that makes it impossible to play wrong notes, combined with a sequencer that supports the function.

The app has been carefully constructed to provide immediate access to the most useful sounds, and is ideal for producing all forms of electronic music on the go with your iPad anywhere.

Novation Launchpad S is the latest version of the truly great 64 pad control surface for Ableton Live known simply as the Novation Launchpad. At about £150, this multi colour controller, the Launchpad S can do all that the Launchpad can do but it can do it quicker and it can now be used in conjunction with the iPad. You may notice how much brighter it all is. I will enjoy seeing this at MusikMesse next week but for now there is this great little You Tube clip to wet your appetite.

Mackie, who are renowned for their quality speakers and mixers have come up with an idea which allows you to mix easily and wirelessly away from the stage with an iPad and introduced the Mackie DL1608 digital mixer. Namm 2013 has brought two further products in this respect, one from Behringer (who love to copy ideas from other manufactures) called the iX16 iPad Mixer and the other is from Mackie themselves but as a smaller 8 channel mixer the DL808. You can’t help notice the speed at which iOS devices are being used more and more in serious professional music applications as an excellent tool to display all kinds of information in a much readable presentation than many small LCD screens have struggled with in the past. Maybe there will come a time when every piece of hardware has a facility to work with a tablet of some description.

Not the biggest product of Namm but something interesting all the same was from CME and their CME X-Key Midi Controller. It is a small 25 note MIDI keyboard very slimline 3.6mm and smart looking but it is velocity sensitive and provides polyphonic aftertouch – wow.

The other good news is that it doesn’t just work with PCs or MACs but will work with iOS and Android devices and has standard size keys. Have a look at the youtube clip to see it operation with an iPad. Continue reading for full specs.

Thank you all for your support during 2012. It is almost a second full-time job keeping this site going. I am sure 2013 is going to be just as exciting as 2012, with Winter NAMM 2013 just around the corner to tease us with new products.

It makes me wonder what will be possible on the iPad at this time next year. Its advances are staggering in the music world and I can’t believe the recent products like the Akai iMPC for an incredible price. You can’t quite top that but I must say when Novation released a free App this month called Launchkey, I was amazed at just how good this is:-

This time of year also gives many offers and discounts. If you are looking for offers on samples then Loopmasters is the place to go:-

Have a great Christmas and I will look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
